Google Wave is Coming

Will current email be replaced?

Will current email be replaced?

Google have a new web product on the way, it’s called Google Wave. I’m pretty about the release of Google Wave, and it will be out towards the end of this year.

So what is Google Wave?

It is basically a reworking of email. Not a new gmail, but a whole different system to email (that will of course work with email). The way it works is that, instead of replying to a single email as a whole. You can reply inside the email, in an IM like way. You can also collaboratively edit documents among other things.

Google Wave’s main advantage is that it allows you to do all of this in real time. So instead of watching a box saying “Calum is typing”, you can actually see what I am typing. It also allows you to playback conversations and see who has edited what, where and when. So if you miss it live, you can still see what happened.

If you want to see it in action, then go here. Or if you are super keen, watch the hour and a half intro below

I’m pretty excited by this all. I think it will be a great for collaboration on the web. It could be a new form of editing documents, and hopefully it will be taken on in a way that I have not seen Google Docs used. I’m thinking that this will be really helpful for Uni ministries especially, as often people can live hours apart.

Bring on the Wave!
