Reading Paths in Design

Recently I did an assignment analysing reading paths in picture books.

This got me thinking about reading paths in all sorts of things, websites, posters, flyers. Pretty much anything that is made to be viewed.

The concept of a reading path starts with what draws the viewers eye first. So, I tried to analyse the reading path of my blog, and it goes something like this…

Reading path analysis

Starts with viewing the header,

followed by going down to the actual material,

Finally moving back up to the widgets column and further down the page.

So hopefully this would be the reading path of this blog, and if the content is interesting to someone, then they can continue further down. It will however be different for different people, someone might be drawn to the blog content first.

The reading path of any text should be designed to draw attention to the content that is vital. This will make it easy to find and the viewer will be more likely to take in information. So in design, think about reading paths, whether it be a poster for n event, or a youth group website. It is important to draw viewers into your content.
