From the bible this week: Priesthood

Last night in bible study we had a pretty sweet discussion about being a priesthood, and what that means exactly.

We were reading this in the context of Exodus, in a short series about Moses, in a hop, skip and a jump through the Old Testament.

The passage in Exodus that we were reading was Chapter 19.

Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

This generated some discussion about what it means for God’s people in the OT to be priests, because weren’t only the Levites priests?

We came to the conclusion that all of God’s people were called to be priests, they were to be a mediator for the other nations and also to be set apart (holy) for God. The Levite priests were priests in a logistical role, to be direct mediators to God and to administer the tabernacle.Different

Today, we are called to be priests.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

Today is different to the OT. We have Jesus (awesome!), and now we are the temple (1 Corinthians 3:16), and we have this awesome privilege of communicating to God directly through prayer! How amazing is that! But we are still a holy nation, called to be separate. So let’s shine like stars in the universe, let’s be different, let’s be holy!
