From the Bible this week: Philippians 1

A short reflection for the week on what I have been reading recently in Quiet Times.
To die is gain

To die is gain

Philippians is one of my favourite books in the Bible, and in chapter one he poses the question of whether it is better to live or die.

If we die, we get to be with God. Simple and sounds like the best option. But…

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.

Philippians 1:21-26

Verse 21 sums up his argument. Living means that we can continue to be fruitful in all that we do, and as Jesus’ return is delayed, more people can be saved.

This is ultimate patience, that Jesus Christ has not yet returned, so that more can be saved.

What a great God we have!

To live is Christ and to die is gain.
